There is a better way to approach weight loss, and that’s with realistic and simple changes that support a healthy lifestyle in the long run. Here’s everything you need to know about where to begin with weight loss!
Nutrition: Small Steps & Simple Swaps
The quickest way to lose momentum in your weight loss journey is by restricting your diet too much too fast. While clearing out your pantry and fridge of all the “unhealthy” foods can be a satisfying start to a weight loss goal, those feelings of accomplishment fade quickly, and the cravings will return. That’s why we recommend starting with smaller steps and slowly cutting back on processed foods and replacing them with whole foods. Here are a few tips as to where to begin with weight loss:
- Drink one less soda (any sugary beverage) per day.
- Add one fruit or vegetable to your plate at each meal.
- If you don’t already eat breakfast– start having one– even if it’s just a banana with peanut butter.
- Try habit tracking– this can help you determine how much water you drink on average and give you an idea of how to increase your daily water intake.
- Focus on eating protein– snacking on protein-rich foods and creating meals around good protein options (seafood, poultry, eggs, etc.) will keep you full and energized.
- Eat foods you enjoy but watch portion sizes! Give yourself the freedom to eat the foods you love, but instead of eating the entire bag of chips, add a handful to your plate and then complement that craving with something more nutrient-dense, like fruit, veggies, nuts, seeds, etc.
Exercise: Consistency Is Key
Daily movement of some kind is critical to not only fat burning but also your digestion, sleep, mood, hormone levels, heart health, and more! If all you can handle is low-intensity exercise, then walk! Walking is one of the best activities that most people can do, and increasing your daily steps by even just a small amount can go a long way in helping you manage your weight.
